Engineers Without Borders

About My Role as Vice President of Engineers Without Borders

In my role as Vice President of the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) club, I am dedicated to fostering sustainable engineering solutions that address real-world challenges in underserved communities. Collaborating with a diverse team of students and professors, I contribute to both the strategic direction and the operational success of our projects.
My responsibilities include:
  • Working closely with the President and team leads to plan, manage, and oversee community-driven projects, ensuring they align with EWB’s mission of sustainability and inclusivity. This included clean ups of the nearby canal.
  • Assisting in identifying and initiating engineering projects, such as developing a water purification system for rivers polluted with textile waste.
  • Leading efforts to engage with the local community, raise awareness about the importance of sustainable engineering where I was privileged to aid in outreach to primary schools near the area.
  • Organising workshops and events to equip members with practical engineering and leadership skills.
One of my most rewarding experiences has been witnessing the tangible impact of our work even though our research was only based within the university. My favourite project was definitely the water purification one where we would need to use activated charcoal (carbon black) to purify water and contain any larger contaminations in hydrogels. I am a big fan of carbon, especially activated carbon since it's such a sustainable solution where you're able to get it very easily.

Jakarta has one of the world's most polluted rivers and it's also home to a large number of coconut tress. Developing a mechanism to mitigate pollution through the use of natural materials such as coconut husks is a sustainable and economically viable solution.
